MP Diane Finley Launches Canada 150 Celebration Initiatives

Canada 150 Plaque Request

“This year is Canada’s 150th birthday! While all of us will be celebrating this momentous occasion throughout the year, I think that it’s equally important to acknowledge our great history and the kind people that we have in Haldimand-Norfolk,” said the Honourable Diane Finley, MP for Haldimand-Norfolk.

MP Finley is launching two initiatives to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation: “The Canada 150 for 150 Awards” and the “Canada 150 Plaque Program”. The Canada 150 for 150 Awards will recognize the achievements and contributions of 150 extraordinary individuals in Haldimand-Norfolk. A nomination process will take place, and the recipients of the award will receive a Canada 150 Medal.

“The people who live in Haldimand-Norfolk really are the glue that holds this community together. No matter what the circumstance is, you will always find them right there willing to lend a hand to make this area the best place to live in Canada. They deserve some recognition, and that’s what I hope that this awards program will do,” said MP Finley.

The Canada 150 Plaque Program will be an ongoing initiative to acknowledge buildings in Haldimand-Norfolk that have stood the test of time. Any building in the area that is 150 years old or older is eligible to receive a plaque that can be mounted onto the building. Documentation that confirms the age of the building is required.

“We have such a rich history in Haldimand-Norfolk, and people here take pride in that. That’s why I thought that it was important to showcase a bit of our history by creating the Plaque Program,” said MP Finley.

“The 150 for 150 awards recognize our current community builders. I believe that in an area as old as ours, its important to honour as well the still-standing evidence of the people who quite literally built the foundations on which or great area – and country – were built,” she added.
