Conservatives Present a New Plan for A Safer Canada and Combatting Human Trafficking

OTTAWA, ON – Human trafficking is a growing epidemic that is destroying lives across Canada, especially victims under the age of 18. Andrew Scheer, the leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, announced our proposal to build on the previous Conservative Government’s National Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking, a plan that Justin Trudeau’s government cancelled. Police and victim support groups, such as Farmtown Canada in Alymer, continue to do great work to help victims and stop the criminals responsible, but more must be done so that human traffickers hear our message.

Andrew Scheer put forward the following proposals to target human trafficking:
• Renew the National Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking.
• Update the Criminal Code to reflect the international definition of human trafficking in the Palermo Protocol.
• Ensure that human traffickers serve consecutive sentences for each of their convictions.
• End automatic bail for those charged with human trafficking offences.

“For the last three and a half years, human traffickers have received the message that fighting their crimes is not a priority.” Andrew Scheer said.

Andrew Scheer’s announcement is a part of the greater plan for A Safer Canada, including gun laws that target criminals, adequately equipping police, and cracking down on gangs. Justin Trudeau and his Liberal government’s justice bill have completely failed to address gang violence in Canada, putting our communities at risk. Even Justin Trudeau’s approach to guns fails to address the real problem and focuses on law-abiding firearms owners instead of the criminals who use guns to threaten and commit violence in our communities. Recognizing that Canadians are feeling less safe in their neighbourhoods, a Conservative government will take the necessary action to make it easier for police to target these criminals and put them behind bars where they belong. Conservatives believe that a government’s responsibility is to protect its citizens, and that is why Andrew Scheer has announced our plan for A Safer Canada.
