Conservative Government Marks World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

June 15, 2010

SIMCOE, ONTARIO, June 15, 2010 – Today, Diane Finley, Member of Parliament for Haldimand-Norfolk, pledged the Conservative Government’s support in the fight against elder abuse.

“Canadian seniors have had a fundamental role in shaping our country and we should ensure that they are protected against abuse. We need to create an environment where people will take action against this serious issue” said Diane Finley. “We need to give Haldimand-Norfolk and seniors across Canada the information they need to raise awareness, stand up and take action.”

It is estimated that between four and ten per cent of Canadian seniors experience some kind of abuse. Mistreatment can take a variety of forms, including financial, physical or psychological abuse, as well as neglect.

“Our Government is committed to providing our seniors with the knowledge and resources they need to identify, stand-up, and fight against elder abuse” said Finley.

Many seniors do not report abuse because they feel isolated and are afraid to speak out. As a result, this problem remains largely hidden. In a recent survey, 96 per cent of Canadians felt that most abuse experienced by older adults is hidden or goes undetected.
